Uh Oh...a new Hobby!

So...I have been researching spinning wheels! I really want to learn how to spin yarn! It seems like a natural progression to my knitting hobby doesn't it? Then I started looking at angora rabbits! My mother thinks that I am nuts but I am really excited! They are the softest fiber around and I might mention they are really cute! Steve's mom had rabbits and they loved them.
I have checked out many types of rabbit hutches. Read about how to feed them. Learned about wool block. Even agility training of rabbits! This may be dangerous! Hahaahahaha! I know my grand daughters are going to have so much fun with bunnies! Angoras are docile and sweet.
That leads me to a chicken coop! Yes, I want a few chickens! In town I can have some as long as they are show chickens. We will see how this all progresses!

  1. Oh goodness pam, I think you have way too much excitement in your life!! heehee, so fun...the kids WILL love it!

growing up we lived in a total suburban neighborhood. When me little brother was 5, he wanted more than anything to get my mom 2 fluffy yellow chicks for mothers day! My dad couldn't resist the determination of a 5 year old! They built a chicken coop in our dog run, and those chickens stayed with us for years, giving us fresh eggs every morning. We were quite a site...you don't often find a chicken coop in the middle of a suburban neighborhood!! Such fun memories though!

  2. I love spinning - I started about three years ago. I was first taught on a drop spindle (you hold it, it is quite small) but I found that quite difficult. In comparison the spinning wheel has a lovely rhythm - but my spun wool is still quite lumpy! It takes a long time to spin enough wool to knit something, but it is very satisfying!
I have an oldish Ashford spinning wheel that I spin on. You can get all kinds of models. Mine is the 'traditional' shape.
I have never considered keeping angora rabbits but I hope you go ahead and give it a go! How do you get the fibre off the rabbits??

  3. several ways to de-fur the rabbits but the one I will try is by grooming (I am a hairdresser)and "pulling" it out by hand. It is pain free for the rabbit and they like to be free of the loose wool! Can't wait to start and find my spinning wheel!
